If you have been told that spine surgery may be necessary, seeking a second opinion can help you better understand your diagnosis, treatment options, and expected outcomes.

Dr. Ryan Berger provides expert reviews for patients considering spine surgery. He will evaluate your medical history, symptoms, diagnostic imaging, and previous treatment recommendations to help determine whether surgery is appropriate and discuss available surgical and non-surgical options.

A second opinion may:

  • Confirm or clarify your diagnosis.
  • Help determine whether surgery is the best next step.
  • Explain alternative surgical and non-surgical treatments.
  • Review the potential benefits, risks, and expected recovery.
  • Help you feel more confident about your treatment decision.

Who may benefit?

You may wish to request a second opinion if:

  • Another physician has recommended spine surgery.
  • You are uncertain whether surgery is necessary.
  • You have been given multiple treatment recommendations.
  • Your symptoms have continued despite non-surgical care.
  • You are considering spinal fusion, disc replacement, decompression, or another spine procedure.
  • You would like an expert review of your MRI or CT before scheduling surgery.

A second opinion is intended to support your decision-making. It does not replace emergency medical care or your relationship with your current physician.

What to submit

For the most complete review, please provide the following information when available:

  • Recent MRI or CT images.
  • Written radiology reports.
  • X-rays or other relevant imaging.
  • Office notes or consultation reports.
  • Details of previous treatments, such as physical therapy, injections, or medications.
  • Previous spine surgery reports, if applicable.
  • A brief description of your current symptoms.
  • The name of the procedure that has been recommended, if known.

Please submit the actual imaging files when possible, not only the written radiology report. Imaging files may be available through your hospital or imaging center’s patient portal, a secure image-sharing link, CD, DVD, or USB drive. Medical second-opinion services commonly request both the imaging and supporting clinical information for an appropriate review.mayoclinic+1
